Healing on Holidays

Published: February 5, 2020

When a loved one passes away, it can be very hard to celebrate the holidays without them. As Valentine's Day is coming up, we start to think about those we love, who have gone before us, who are with us, and who may come after us. There are many ways to honor a loved one who has passed this Valentine’s Day, and use this time of reflection to ponder those who will come after us.

This Valentine’s Day, you can tell stories about your loved one to family members and friends. What is your favorite memory of your loved one? Do you have a favorite picture of them? If you have made a Facebook Memorial Page for your loved one, you can post memories about your loved one to remember them by. On Bateman’s website you can also share stories and photos on their tribute page. This is also the place where you can light a candle for them and send them virtual flowers. It is a safe place to go to post notes to your loved one and add to their life story.

On this Valentine’s Day, it is a great time to go through some of your loved one’s precious items to spark memories and to remember them by. Did you receive your grandmother’s china? Take it out and use it for a meal. Did your father give you a tie or lapel pin? Consider wearing it to work. Maybe your loved one is a close friend and they gave you music that you two used to listen to or books that you both enjoyed. Valentine’s Day is a great time to celebrate your loved one and sharing memories, and a person’s precious objects is a great place to start sparking memories.

As your reflect on those who have passed, take some time to consider those who will come after you. What do you want to share with them? Tell stories that your children or grandchildren don't know. Talk about what school was like for you or how you met the love of your life. What car did you drive when you were first getting your license? Where was the very first place you worked?

At Bateman, we understand that holidays can be hard after a loved one has passed away. We hope you that you have a peaceful Valentine’s Day and that you are able to spend time celebrating those you love, who has gone before you, who is with you, and who may come after you.
