What should I do if a Death Occurs at Home?

Published: November 8, 2021

What should I do if a death occurs at home?

At Home

For a death that occurred in the home, you will need to call 911. If there is a do-not-resuscitate file, have it ready when the medical staff arrives. In the event that the person is transported to the hospital, the hospital staff will contact the funeral home. Once the individual is pronounced dead, then the funeral home of choice can be contacted.

No One Present

In the event that no one was present at the time of death, you will need to contact the police before moving the deceased to another location.

Accidental Death

In the event that the death occurred due to an accident, such as a car accident or drowning, the medical professionals will contact the appropriate authorities. If the accident occurred in the home, call 911.
