What Happens to a Person Who Passed Once They are Taken to the Funeral Home?

Published: January 3, 2022

What happens to a person who passed once they are taken to the funeral home?

After a death occurs and the proper authorities have been notified, then a funeral home needs to be chosen to come to pick up the deceased. The funeral home will come and place the decedent onto a gurney to take them into a funeral vehicle. This could be a traditional vehicle such as a hearse or a more modern vehicle such as a van. Once the deceased arrives at the funeral home, they will be placed in a refrigeration unit.

The funeral home will not go forward with preparing the body for final disposition until the family signs authorization forms. The funeral home will first call to gather information about the decedent and set up an appointment for final arrangements to be made. During that appointment, the funeral director will go over options for cremation or burial. Only after authorization papers are filled out will the funeral home proceed with cremation, embalming or burial.
