You never know when or when you will die. Even though most Americans over the last decade have died due to chronic illness, over 2,000 adults die every year in accidents in Oregon alone.
No One Present
In the event that no one was present at the time of death, you will need to contact the police. This needs to be done before the deceased is moved or handled by you or other people present.
Accidental Death
In the event that the death occurred due to an accident, such as a car accident or drowning, the medical professionals who arrive on scene will contact the appropriate authorities. If the accident occurred in the home, call 911.
At a Care Facility
If your loved one passes away while under the care of a facility, staff from the facility will contact you and notify appropriate authorities.
At a Hospital
If there has been an accident or emergency and your loved one is at a hospital when they pass, the hospital staff will attempt to contact family and find out the funeral home of choice. The medical staff will then contact the funeral home.
Outside of the Home
If the death occurred in the workplace, 911 will be called. The person will be transported to the hospital and the staff there will contact the funeral home to arrange the transfer of care to the funeral home.
