Ann Davis

January 22, 2018, 3:00 a.m. "I was holding her hand. She said 'I love you,' and I replied 'I love you too, Sweetheart.' We kissed and she stopped breathing." -Don Davis Ann was born to Irwin S. and Priscilla K. (Fisch) Adams in Portland, OR. She lived her first 25 years in the same beautiful home in Milwaukie, OR. She had a privileged life. She attended grade school in Milwaukie, and then high school at St. Helen's Hall in Portland, an Episcopal live-in boarding school, 1944-1948. She attended the University of Oregon for one year, 1948-49, but then decided she wanted to live at home, so she attended Vanport College (now Portland State University) for two years. She worked for a few years at Northwestern Mutual Fire Association in Portland. Don continues telling her story: "At about this time I received my OSU Civil Engineering degree and went to work in downtown Portland in January 1952. We were not to meet until a hot day in July, 1955 on a " blind date" arranged by my boss's son and his future wife who worked near Ann. Ann said that I didn't say much on that first date, but I must have been smitten because we dated through August and September 1955. I asked her to be my wife in October, and we married on May 12, 1956 in St. John's Episcopal Church in Milwaukie, OR. "In June 1956 we moved to Milton-Freewater, OR where I was City Engineer for the next 4 ½ years. "Our son Ted was born in Walla Walla, WA in December, 1958. We moved to Corvallis where I became City Engineer in June 1961. "We moved to Newport, OR where I became Newport's first City Manager on October 1, 1962. Our daughter Sally was born in June, 1963 in Newport. "Ann created our home and took good care of our children while I was so busy running the City of Newport. We were a real team in this town, and it's amazing how well we fit together. She was my strength behind the scenes. During those years she was also sometimes affectionately known as "Mother City.' "She pursued her arts talents relentlessly over the years. She did china painting, tole painting, and pine needle basketry; made hand-painted Christmas ornaments; she knitted beautifully, made wheat art, and finally honored her love for quilting for many years. She was truly a skilled artist." Ann was a charter member of the Quilt Guild and belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, PEO, the Knotty Ladies, the Yaquina Art Association, the Lincoln County Historical Society, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Atonement Lutheran Church and Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. "Over the years we traveled together all over the U.S. We greatly enjoyed theater and other performances in Newport, Portland and New York. Time passed quickly through our almost 62 years together." Ann was loved and cherished by her husband Don, her children and other family members, her many friends and her community. Special thank yous to her caregivers from Aging Wisely and Hospice who demonstrated loving kindness as they brought care and comfort in so many ways. We all miss her. Ann is survived by her husband, Donald A. Davis of Newport; her sister, Carol J. (Adams) Yonker; son Ted Davis (Debbie) & daughter Sally Davis Fulham (Richard). Also five grandchildren: Molly Ann, William Blair & Kelsey Korrinn Davis and Paul Davis Fulham & Dana Michelle Fulham; nieces and nephews: Robert, Charles and James Adams and John & Katherine Yonker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irwin S. and Priscilla K. Adams and by her brother Scott Adams. A memorial service for Ann will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport on Saturday, March 17, 2018. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Priscilla Ann Davis Art Scholarship, c/o Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport.
