Gary L Hoffman

Gary L Hoffman October 18, 1941 - June 17, 2022 Gary L Hoffman of Toledo, Oregon, passed away on June 17, 2022. Gary was born to Carl and Meta Hoffman in Salem, Oregon, on October 18, 1941. Gary attended Sweagle Grade School, Parish Junior High, and North Salem High School before entering the military as an engine mechanic in the US Navy at age 17. As an engine mechanic, Gary's ship would deliver oil to the other US Ships in the Pacific. On May 29, 1960, he married the love of his life Shirley Pierpoint in Salem, Oregon. Gary first met Shirley at North Salem High School, where they were classmates. In July 1961, while Gary was stationed in San Diego, California, he became a father to his first son, Craig. Gary was honorable discharged from the military in 1962. In December 1962, he began working at Georgia Pacific in Toledo. In his spare time, you could find Gary working in his shop, working on vehicles, and fixing things. Anyone that knew Gary and his love for helping people could count on Gary at any time to help them out. Gary's second son, Tim, was born in July 1964. Gary's daughter, Wendy, was born in January 1968. Gary retired from GP after 35 years in 1997. After Gary's retirement, he and his wife Shirley traveled to Alaska and loved to camp. Gary's favorite camping spot for 30 years was in Cottage Grove, Oregon, at Pine Meadows Campground, where family and friends would visit and camp with Gary and Shirley. For 15 years, Gary and Shirley would camp and enjoy the Jamboree in Sweet Home. Gary loved country music. Gary is survived by his wife Shirley Hoffman of 62 years in Toledo; son, Craig Hoffman and wife Debbie of Rose Lodge; son, Tim Hoffman and his wife Rachel of Beaverton; daughter Wendy Justice and her husband Tim of Toledo; his grandchildren which he had many, Nick Hoffman of Hubbard, Stefanie Hoffman of Eugene, Keith Lewis of Rose Lodge, Morgan Barnard of Idaho, Wilson Lewis of Rose Lodge, Natt Barnard of Toledo, Samantha Justice of Toledo, Madison Hoffman and Matthew Hoffman of Beaverton; great grandkids, Austin Fitch, Brooklyn Hoffman, Kloe Fitch, Ryan Hoffman, and Peter Henry Lewis; brother, Arnie Hoffman of Silverton; brother, Arlyn Hoffman and wife Cheri of Depoe Bay; and sister-in-law; Jan Hoffman of Kaiser; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary is preceded in death by father, Carl Hoffman, mother Meta Hoffman, brother's Wallace Hoffman, Richard Hoffman, and sister-in-law Rudene Hoffman. A graveside service will take place on Friday, June 24, at 1:00 pm at the Toledo Cemetery.
