Joanna Beverly Rose

Joanna was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on April 16, 1932. At 6 weeks she was adopted by her loving parents, Ruth and Harland Washburn. After their deaths she found her birth mother and was also welcomed into that family. Joanna was Miss Green Bay in 1952 and was well known for her singing voice and musical abilities. In 1952, while in college, she married Carl Pruess and they had four beautiful children: Carlyn, Jill, Dania, and Jon. They later divorced. Joanna was proud that by age 30 she not only had 4 children, but also had built a Frank Lloyd Wright house and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in early childhood education and art and was a member of Lambda Phi Chi. She worked as a teacher, model, newspaper journalist, and had an antique and decorating business for about 30 years. She was always creative with art and writing projects. Joanna also won several community service awards in Wisconsin, including the Carol Award and was made an honorary Jaycette. One of her feats was forming a non-profit organization to bring the performing arts to grade school children in her rural Milwaukee community for the first time. Joanna married Edward Rose and they moved to Pacifica California and enjoyed the Bay Area from Madison, Wisconsin. After 20 years together, Ed died suddenly in 1995. Due to her desire to stay near the ocean, and not knowing a soul there, Joanna moved to Newport the following year where she has been active in the Visual Arts Center.She was always grateful that she had the opportunity to travel to all of the 50 states, the Caribbean Islands, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as all of the Central American countries and most of Mexico and Europe. Her hobbies included crafts, reading, crossword puzzles, and she was an avid theatre and movie buff. Joanna is survived by her four children and grandchildren: Justin, Ian and Temoc; her adopted sister, Sue Agamite and family; and half brother Carl Whitford. Services will be held at Bateman Funeral Home on Saturday, November 21st, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joanna Rose's name to the Newport Visual Arts Center or Newport Performing Arts Center.
