Loris Iola Fine-Spores

Loris Iola (Moffit) Fine-Spores passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at her home in Toledo, Oregon. She was 84. Born March 22, 1933 to parents Ralph and Iola Moffit, Loris lived her entire life in Toledo, save for the summers she spent in her youth near Monroe, Oregon in the Willamette Valley. Loris graduated from Toledo High School with the class of 1951, and was very proud of her Boomer heritage. Loris married Verlyn 'Bud' Fine of Toledo in 1952, and they had three children together, Rick Fine, Kay (Fine) Chambers, and Shery (Fine) Dreyer. The Fine house was widely known as a "community space" for Rick, Kay, and Shery's classmates, neighborhood kids, and family friends, filled with good food, vibrant debate, and a broad definition of family. After Bud's death in 1997, Loris was happily married in November 2001 to Richard Spores, originally of Toledo, Oregon, until his death in June 2005. Professionally, Loris worked many jobs. She assisted the Lincoln County District Attorney, wrote the Lincoln County column for the Salem Capital Journal, worked in the office at the Toledo Hospital, and worked for the Lincoln County School District for 18 years helping curate the libraries at Toledo Junior High School and Yaquina View Elementary School, where she made many lifelong friends and where her granddaughter, Andria, teaches today. Loris was one of the last people to escape the 1979 fire at Toledo Junior High, which singed her nylons as she exited the building. Among her hobbies, Loris was an enthusiast of local history, to which she made her own contributions. A veracious reader, she was a strong supporter, volunteer, and user of the Toledo Library, where staff had a difficult time keeping books stocked to support her habit. Loris also kept a close eye each day on the weather forecast, which she enjoyed sharing with friends and family. Cold and wet coastal winters helped catalyze Loris' love of travel. She enjoyed RV trips to warmer climates, camping in Central Oregon, and most of all, vacations in Hawaii. Deeply committed to family, Loris enjoyed large homemade meals, preferably featuring local salmon, crab, or clams harvested by her loved ones. She carefully scrutinized nearly every salmon caught by her family over several decades, and her signature clam fritters were unrivaled in taste and texture. Loris was quick to suggest a game of cards with friends and family, and frequented the weekly game day at Toledo Foursquare Church, where she worshiped. Though the side-effects of medication made it difficult for her to hold on to her cards, Loris won her final game of pinochle, enjoyed with loved ones. Loris is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Iola Moffit, husbands Bud Fine and Richard Spores, brother Loyd Moffit, and sister Wanda Moffit. She is survived by her brother Tom Moffit (Dusty), and children Rick Fine (Cynthia), Kay Chambers (Jim), and Shery Dreyer (David Getner), grandchildren Scott Fine, Bryan Fine (Jesse), Andria Douglas (Bo), Eric Chambers (Corrie), Brad Freeborn, and Rainah Dreyer, great-grandchildren Ellie and Jude Douglas, Olive, Flora, and Ernest Fine, and James and Jane Chambers and nephew Loyd 'Ace' Moffit and nieces Ronda Moffit, Jennifer 'Vena' Moffit and Rebekah (Moffit) Richmond. A funeral in her memory will be held at Toledo Foursquare Church (1803 NW Lincoln Way), on Saturday, March 3, at 2:00 PM.
