Mary E Martin

Mary Elizabeth Martin, wife of William H. (Bill) Martin, mother of Kathi Loughman and Debbie Bates, grandmother and great-grandmother, has passed away. A long-time resident of Waldport, OR, she was born in Cortez, CO to Yuell and Eula Greenlee on February 13, 1928, the second of three children. She was born in her grandparent's cabin on the homestead, with the family doctor arriving by horse and buggy. At the age of seven, the family moved to Phoenix, AZ, Mary and her sister riding in a rumble seat all the way. On November 25, 1950, she met her future husband, Bill, on a blind date arranged by Bill's mother, who had met Mary at the phone company where they were both working at the time. It was love at first sight for Mary and Bill, and they were married in January 1951. In 1957, Mary, Bill and their two daughters moved to Bakersfield, CA where they lived for many happy years. During that time, Mary worked as the proud home maker, caring for and raising her young family. Mary and Bill moved to Eugene, OR in the early 1980s, spending their weekends visiting Waldport, a place they both loved. After Bill's retirement from the railroad in 1990, they bought and cleared some land, and built their dream forever home. Their children and grandchildren also moved to the coast to be close to them. Over the years, Mary and Bill renewed their marriage vows two times. Mary loved dancing, and she and Bill were always the best couple on the dance floor. She also enjoyed sewing for her girls, camping, fishing, crabbing, cooking, and sharing with visiting family and friends the beauty and wonder of this place they called home. Mary is survived by her husband, Bill, her daughters, three grandsons and four great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A private family service was entrusted to Bateman Funeral Home. Mary was the rock and the heart and soul of her family. Her life was filled with the giving and receiving of love, light, joy and laughter. She is and will be forever loved. "If I turn into my mother, or even half the woman she is, I'll consider my life a successful one."
