Richard "Dick" Bevens

On Monday, June 11th, Richard "Dick" W. Bevens took his last walk on Nye Beach while being held in the arms of his wife Vickie and his daughters Kathleen and Kenna. From his hometown of Newport, Oregon, he joined his parents Harold & Jane Bevens, and his brother Kenneth (Ken) Bevens for a long awaited reunion with family and friends in Heaven. Dick was born July 20,1937 in a little white house on High Street which is still there. His parents owned Nye Beach Market in the 1940's thru the early 1960's. His childhood was filled with swimming at the "Nat", where he became a junior lifeguard when he wasn't diving from the rafters. He romped in the sand dunes and splashed in the waves of the Pacific Ocean with his dog "Pete". Dick played baseball and enjoyed family trips to Siltcoos Lake to stay at the Water Lilly houseboats for vacations. Dick attended elementary school in what is now Newport City Hall. He played his trumpet with the Newport High School Marching Band when he was just 10 years old. He went to the coke-shop and the movies with his buddies. He was Senior Class President and continued to play his trumpet in the Newport Dance Band. His class was the 1st to graduate from the "new" high school in 1955. He attended the Christian Church with Grandma Edwards, was a Demolay leader, and played each sport with joy! Richard went on to graduate in 1960 from Oregon State "College" (now OSU) and was definitely a Beaver Believer as well as a Fraternity Brother of DU. He served his Country in the Army and then went to work for Chevron in Oregon, Washington & eventually Alaska where he spent 30 yrs. He worked for The Alaska Pipeline with Bechtel; North Pole Refinery; Big 3 Lincoln Welding; Sourdough Fuel, White Pass Alaska & Petro Marine during his years in Fairbanks, Ketchikan and Juneau. But Newport was calling him home and in 2004 he & his wife Vickie became the owners of "Bevens Market & Deli" until 2014 when, because of health, Dick decided to finally retire. This outgoing, funny, gentle soul was loved by many friends, family & coworkers. He was a positive influence to all in his life and was well loved by many, especially his wife, Vickie and his children: Lorene Palmer, John Bevens, Beth (Jeremy) Richards, Brenda (Eric) Weber, Kathleen Bevens, and Kenna Bevens (Scotty); and grandchildren, Katherine (Reise) Weyner; Max Tamillo, Jake Tamillo & Lacey Weber. Dick was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He never gave up, he never complained and he kept believing in hope & faith. When treatments stopped he said, "I don't want to look like I am not trying" - that was something he never did; but it was time to rest. Each of his kids came for a visit. He opened his eyes, hugged them & told them he loved them. His youngest daughters arrived on June 9th. He had waited for them. Dick's family sat with him sharing memories and love. They let him know that it was okay to go... he listened... at rest and at peace at last Dick was a good man, a kind and funny man who loved sports (especially baseball), 55 Chevys, trumpet music, bowling, the Bevens family reunions in the apple orchard in Eddyville. Most of all, he loved his wife and children. Now he is full of happiness at the best reunion of all! We miss him so very much but he is watching over us and we will see him again one day - We believe that for sure!
