Roy H Fielding

Roy H. Fielding, 93, passed away on July 19th, 2017, at his home in Southshore in Newport, Oregon. He was born in St. Helens, Oregon, to parents Roy and Eva Fielding. In 1945 he married Doris Mae Gray and they were blessed with 72 years together. They had three sons: Michael, Jeffrey and Jonathan. They also hosted two foster sons Thomas Blount, and John Camacho and always had 'extra' boys in their house. Roy graduated from Oregon State College (now University) in 1948 as an Electrical Engineer. He began his career in what was then the emerging job field of Traffic Engineering, in Portland, Oregon. Traffic Engineering would lead him and his growing family to places including Cincinnati, Ohio, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and finally Los Angeles, California. He was dedicated to creating smooth traffic patterns and flows, developing traffic control signals and road signage and considered traffic safety his highest priority - he even educated high school students in traffic safety. In addition, his soon nationally recognized technical expertise was called upon to help set up federal traffic standards, both for traffic control and traffic control equipment. Many of these standards are still in place today. In his latter years he was widely renown as an expert witness in traffic court cases. After Roy's retirement in 1997 he and Doris moved back to Oregon and settled in Southshore, Newport (an area which Roy had actually visited as a child in the 1930ies!). They continued to lead an active social life, travelling in the U.S. and to various regions and countries around the world. In Southshore 'Colonel Fielding', as he was lovingly called, hosted an annual community event - the building of a summer beach fort christened "Fort Fielding". He was respected and valued and seen by many as 'the soul of Southshore'. Roy was a member of All Nations Lutheran Church, Newport which Doris continues to attend. Roy is survived by his wife, Doris, their sons Michael (Ulla), Jeffrey (Kathryn) and also by 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. His youngest son Jonathan preceded him in death in April of this year. A service in memory of Roy will be held on Thursday, August 24th, at 11 am at All Nations Lutheran Church, 358 NE 12th St, Newport, Oregon (across from Sam Case School), followed by a light memorial lunch at the church.
