Tony James Larson of Newport, OR died on November 27, 2019 in Newport at the age of 56. Born on January 5, 1963 in Coos Bay, OR, Tony was placed for adoption by his biological mother Ida Roe. Ida’s kindheartedness brought Tony to his parents where he and his brother were raised in Reedsport, OR.
Tony was quite adventurous as a child and participated in school activities ranging from swimming, acting and singing, although Tony’s greatest sports love was football. The story goes that he may (or may not have – wink wink) signed a few permission slips to play.
Tony started his commercial fishing career while still in high school. While we would like to believe that it was solely the call of the ocean that brought Tony to commercial fishing let’s be honest, it was also the excitement and of course the Benjamins. Tony moved up and down the coast wherever his job would take him. In his 35 plus years of commercial fishing, he crabbed, dragged, and Albacore fished with various fisheries out of Dutch Harbor, AK, Seattle, WA, Astoria and Newport, OR, down to Bodega Bay, Moss Landing, and San Diego in CA and all ports in-between including Fiji.
Tony loved to laugh and daily tried find humor in just about every situation, much to a few people’s dismay. However, Tony had a sensitive and caring side he didn’t often show especially when it came to family. To Tony, family meant everything, and his greatest days were the births of his son’s Austyn and Anthony.
Tony did not know his biological family while growing up and only found out about and met a lot of them within the last two years. The rumors on the street are that Tony could not stop talking about his “new” family.
Tony is survived by his children Austyn S. Larson and Anthony J. Reed of OR; sisters Michelle (Waggoner) Deckert of RI and Heidi Hull of OR; his brothers Ted Larson of SD, Tony Hull of OR, and Sam Hull of AK. In addition to nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-laws, Tony is survived by his Aunt Charlene (Pete) Bry of OR and Uncles Philip Roe, and Jerry Hull of OR.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents Jean (Butler) and Leonard Larson, mother Ida Roe, and brother Chad Waggoner.
Tony’s Irish Wake was held at the Eagles club in Newport, OR, where he was a member, on December 8.
