Gladys Fay Hartsel May 8, 1939 - August 22, 2020 Gladys Fay Hartsel, 81, of Newport, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2020 in the home of her daughter, Karen Barth. She was born May 8, 1939 in Cambridge, OH, the twelfth child of Martin and Helen Thompson. She graduated from Ashland High School in Ashland, OH, in 1957. She was married to Larry Eugene Hartsel from June 3rd 1961 to 1990. In 1973 they relocated to Lincoln County and she began her career working for the Lincoln County school district as a secretary. She later worked as an office manager for both the Lincoln County Health Department and Spiro Landscaping until she opened her own bookkeeping business. Accomplishing meaningful work brought her great satisfaction, and she continued to work diligently until just weeks before her passing. She combined the heart of a volunteer, deep faith, and devotion to serving her church, First Presbyterian Church of Newport, dutifully serving as a Deacon, volunteering for various ministries, and coordinating the church's annual rummage sale. In addition, she was an active/board member of Business & Professional Women (BPW), PEO, and Habitat for Humanity. Gladys was always willing to help in any way needed and often spent Sunday mornings driving to the homes of elderly friends to bring them to church service. She prided herself in remaining physically active and was known as being always on the go. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She especially loved being a grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by, daughter Karen Barth and her husband, Brian, of Newport; daughter Denise Lovelace and her husband Lt. Col Daniel Lovelace, U.S. Marine Corps, of Northern Virginia; grandson Brent Barth (great-grandsons David and Titus) of Waldport; grandson Jason Barth and his wife Kristin of Newport; grandson Christopher Barth and his wife Ashley, of Albany; grandson Phillip Lovelace of Northern Virginia; sisters Gloria Fike and Judy Kaufmann and brother George Thompson and numerous nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life for Gladys Hartsel will be held on Saturday, August 14th, 2021 at Newport Presbyterian at 1:00 pm.
