Gwenetta Lee Bates

Gwenetta "Gwen" Lee Bates (née Hughes) Gwenetta "Gwen" Lee Bates, 71, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, with her children at her side, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, kindness, and love. Gwen was born on February 9, 1955, at Hamilton Air Force Base in California. After spending her early years in California with her mother, they settled in Boise, Idaho, where Gwen built the life she cherished. There, she married the love of her life, Charlie, and together they raised two children. Following Charlie's retirement, they fulfilled a dream of moving to Depoe Bay, Oregon, where they found their own little slice of paradise along the Oregon coast. Gwen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kati Bates; her son, Dan Bates (Shawn); her grandchildren, Casey Burns (Michaela) and Gabe Guerrero; and her great-grandchildren, Casey and Gatlin. She also leaves behind many friends and loved ones who will miss her deeply. A gifted artist, Gwen earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Boise State University. She built a career as a realistic oil painter, with her work exhibited at Brown's Gallery and the Boise Art Museum. She also created illustrations for the Boise State Alumni Magazine. Through her artwork, Gwen shared her remarkable talent and her unique way of seeing the world. Outside of painting, Gwen found joy in life's quieter moments. She loved to read every chance she got and crocheted countless blankets for family, friends, and others. Each handmade gift reflected the care and generosity she showed throughout her life. Gwen will be remembered for her artistic spirit, generous heart, and the love she shared with those fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will live on through her family, her artwork, and the countless lives she touched. A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026, at Gracie's Sea Hag, 58 US-101, in Depoe Bay, Oregon. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories and celebrate Gwen's life. Food and beverages will be available for purchase; guests are kindly asked to cover their own orders.
