Mary Lou McGinnis June 26, 1938 (Toledo, Oregon) to February 1, 2024 (Albany, OR) Mary Lou McGinnis, a woman known for her humor, love, and sassy spirit, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents Susie and Everett Martin, her sister Georgia, the father of her children, Dan Richardson Sr., her second husband, Howard McGinnis, and two daughters Leta Richardson and Elizabeth Sabrowski Mary’s leaves behind her brother Ted, two sons Dan (Gwen Raab) Richardson Jr. and Leroy (Joanie) Richardson, her daughter Rose (Sean) Walsh, six grandchildren David, Megan, Katie, Stephanie, Xavier, and Caitlin, a multitude of great-grandchildren, and other loving relatives. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Mary Lou thrived in the human-centered environment of the Department of Veteran Affairs. However, when technology started demanding her attention instead of veterans, her independent spirit led her to say, "Thanks, but no thanks!" and she happily retired. Around seven years ago, Mary was diagnosed with vascular dementia. While her memory may have faded, her warmth and love remained constant. She possessed a unique ability to connect with everyone, even when she couldn't remember their names. Sharing stories and making “new” friends became her daily joy. Her love for life's simple pleasures shone through in her fondness for flowers, plants, fun socks, smiley faces, quilting, Tweety Bird, the color yellow, and her beloved cat Patience, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge several years ago. Mary's family remembers her as a vibrant spirit – fun, funny, sassy, and overflowing with love. She spoke her mind with honesty and kindness, making everyone feel welcome and accepted. Even when she seemed quiet, she was absorbing everything, ready to share her wit or wisdom at the perfect moment. Mary Lou touched many lives, and her absence leaves a void. Her family expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff at Waverly Place in Albany, who provided her with love and care during her final years. Mary’s internment will take place on March 11, 2024, at 11 AM in Newport, Oregon. Mary's life was a beacon of joy and kindness, touching the lives of everyone she met. In her spirit, the family would love for her memory to live on through acts of kindness. Instead of sending flowers, they invite you to find a way to brighten someone else's day, whether through a thoughtful gesture, sending flowers to someone who needs joy, a helping hand, or simply spreading a smile. Let Mary's legacy continue by paying her kindness forward and making the world a little brighter, just like she did.
