Thomas Allen Moon

Thomas Allen Moon passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 79. At his death he was a devoted brother, a loving, supportive uncle and a kind, big hearted, loyal friend to many. Thomas, more commonly referred to as Tom or Tommy, was born January 13, 1947, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was the first of three children born to Arthur Thomas and Leona Marie Moon. He would be joined just a year later by a sister, Linda Marie, and 8 years later by a brother, Michael Wayne. Tom proved to be a hard worker early on in life as the family moved to western states he spent several of his early years helping the family make ends meet by picking cotton, potatoes in California and then strawberries, raspberries, green beans in Oregon. As it turned out, that early work ethic served him well because when he had finished just 2 terms of college his father had a debilitating heart attack and Tom quit school to get a job at the GP Paper Mill to support the family. He soon became a Journeyman Mason at the mill and retired, as such, nearly 40 years later. Tom was quiet and somewhat shy, but those who took the time to get to know him found him to be a kind soul who showed his love through his actions. He took care of those he loved with unwavering devotion and stood firmly by his beliefs, even when doing so was difficult or unpopular. His strength, integrity, and quiet compassion left a lasting impression on those around him. I his earlier years, Tom thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold panning and camping. He was always up for a hand of canasta or pinochle. He was quite good at math and so found it satisfying and intriguing to help someone (like his little brother) solve building problems. And he was very passionate about rockhounding and was very knowledgeable about stones and gems. In his later years he dabbled in photography. Due to his love of creation, he especially treasured taking pictures of the sunsets, flowers and animals. Of course, he became the designated photographer of family and friends. May be why there were so few pictures of him in later years. Thomas had a spiritual need as well. He was introduced to the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ early in life and he appreciated what he was learning from the bible. He was extremely faithful in his attendance at meetings, assemblies and conventions throughout the years. And remarkably, at the age of 77, Thomas was baptized as one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. He is survived by his sister, Linda Smallman and brother, Michael Moon (Nancy) and many nephews and a niece whom he became very close to. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, friends, and all who have had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial for Thomas will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 7025 NE Avery St. Newport, Oregon 97365. The family kindly requests that no flowers or donations need to be made in his memory. Arrangements were cared for by the Bateman Funeral Home.
