Obituary

Betsy Haug Ogden, a world-renowned choreographer, dancer and teacher, died at the age of 78 years. Betsy died peacefully beside her Son on the Oregon Coast.Betsy is survived by her husband, Keith Shockley, her Son, Jamie Ogden, her Granddaughter, Julie Kim Bracamontes Ogden, her sister Margaret (Peggy) Haug Molitch, and her nephews and nieces, Freddy, Louise and Sarah Molitch. She is predeceased by her Father, Frederick Carl Haug, and her Mother, Isabella Herbert Haug. Betsy was born in Seattle, Washington. Betsy later attended the University of Washington, before pursuing her life-long dream of performing on Broadway in New York City. Betsy achieved that goal and so much more. Ultimately, Betsy’s performing career ranged from Broadway (Dance Captain in Promises, Promises) to ballet (two shows as ballet soloist at Radio City Music Hall) to television (Kraft Music Hall, Tony Awards, Ed Sullivan Show) and the national company of West Side Story. Betsy later became an international choreographer and master-teacher in New York, London, Tokyo, Rome, Las Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City and Toronto for (among others) Peter Allen, Joel Grey Gloria Gaynor and Liza Minnelli. Betsy also opened her own dance studio in New York, becoming one of Manhattan’s most popular jazz dance teachers.

Betsy later opened (and successfully ran) a bed and breakfast in Thorp, Washington, where she raised her only child. She was a loving and devoted Wife and Mother, who enjoyed her family, antiques, scrabble, Dr. Mario, reading Agatha Christie novels, watching the ocean and taking naps with her pets more than anything else in this world (except dancing). Betsy retired in Depoe Bay, Oregon. Betsy is deeply missed by all that knew her.
