Harriet Katherine Griese was born at home on June 26th, 1932 in Burt, Iowa to Valeta Marie Dundas and Martin Griese. She joined her sisters LaVonne Francis (Schaff) and Mary Joann (Maack), each of whom preceded her in death. Together, they managed to live a happy life in small town Iowa during the Great Depression. Harriet played basketball and made beautiful music with her voice and her French horn.
Upon graduation from Saint Catherine’s School of Nursing in Omaha, she and a friend took a map, a blindfold, and a pin to find their new home in Portland Oregon. While in Portland, Harriet met Kenneth Edward Shivers. They married on August 1, 1955 in Algona, Iowa. Together they travelled the world. Harriet’s taste for travel never waned, and she had adventures that few even dream of. Her biggest journey, however, was raising her 6 children: Michael, Robert (Toni Crosby), Patrick (Katherine), Theresa Wisner (Richard), Margaret, and James (Deborah). She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Harriet was fortunate to die peacefully in her home, surrounded by her beloved children singing her on to her next journey. Two weeks before her death, her family gathered around to honor her while she lived. She considered this to be her life celebration, so no further services will be held. If desired, donations may be made to Lincoln County Food Share in her honor.
