James Alan Daum passed away at the age of 65 on August 29, 2021 at his home in Newport, Oregon. He has left his physical body behind, but his spirit lives on and his metaphysical journey continues.
Jim was born in Crescent City, CA on May 17, 1956 to Joan Fishe and Robert Daum. He grew up in Ukiah and Clear Lake, and later moved to Woodland and Sacramento in the late 1970s. He worked as a sailor in the Merchant Marine when he met Sue Hall, his soon-to-be wife. His first daughter, Jessica, was born in 1979, followed shortly after by his second daughter, Jackie, born in 1980. Sue and Jim divorced in 1989.
Jim loved the ocean and had a rich family history of mariners. His biological father, Bob, was in the Coast Guard, and his stepfather, Jack, was a captain in the merchant marine. Jack and Joan were married when Jim was 13. He shared his love of the ocean with his daughters, who also both sailed briefly.
Jim also spent some time working as a plumber and a mail courier, but his lifelong passion was as a handyman. He repaired computers, phones, appliances, houses, electronic equipment, cars, and anything he could. He especially enjoyed helping his daughters and neighbors and kept his social circle small. His closest friends describe him as a good man and a gentleman. He was a simple man and rarely asked for help from others. He was also well-loved for his sense of humor.
Jim preferred to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle. He made his own natural remedies, fixed his own cars, and was extremely resourceful and frugal.
He enjoyed road trips on the California coast, occasional outings to the casino, thrift store shopping, watching comedy shows (especially Seinfeld reruns), listening to classic rock and new age music, metaphysical studies, and working on his cars. In his younger years he also dabbled with drawing, playing the guitar, and writing poetry.
Jim is survived by his daughters Jessica Long (Redding, CA) and Jackie Daum (Seattle, WA) and son in law, Erick Long. He has two grandchildren, Maddox and Eliza Long. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Daum, step-mother, Kathryn Daum, and four half brothers, William, Paul, Michael, and Carl Daum. He also had several friends in Newport, who cared for him like family. His final wishes were to be cremated and returned to the sea in his birth city of Crescent City, California.
