Jerold "Jerry" Powell

1939 ~ 2022 (age 82)

Our beloved Jerold “Jerry” Powell, 82, longtime resident of the central Oregon coast, passed away in May 2022. He was born in Rock Springs, WY to Verna and Alme Powell and later moved to Longview, Washington. There he attended Kessler Elementary, St. Rose Catholic School, and graduated from R.A. Long High School.

A talented artist at a young age, he earned an Associate’s of Arts degree in Art from Lower Columbia College and studied illustration at California College of Arts and Crafts (then the Chouinard Art Institute) in Los Angeles, California. In 1961 he joined the Marine Corps after receiving his draft notice and served honorably both on active duty and in the reserves. Following active duty, he returned to college and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Art, a Bachelor’s of Education, and a Master’s of Arts from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. While Jerry’s Master’s of Arts was focused primarily in printmaking and sculpture, he was a gifted illustrator as well.

Jerry’s curiosity, talent, and steadfast work ethic led to stints in many occupations from college professor to cattle hand, but many people remember him as the dedicated and spirited art teacher at Newport Middle School (formerly Lincoln Junior High School) in Newport, Oregon. He created an innovative arts and crafts program (Occupational Versatility) where students designed their own projects under his guidance and created everything from stained glass and leather work to woodworking pieces and jewelry. He enjoyed the camaraderie of so many wonderful colleagues and loved creating projects with kids for 29 years.

Following his retirement, Jerry cooked at the Newport Elk’s Lodge for their “Hole in the Roof Gang” breakfast fundraisers, served as a trustee, and painted a mural of Yaquina Bay in addition to other volunteer projects. He enjoyed many hobbies from scuba diving to landscaping. Jerry was great company—he had a way of bringing everyone to good humor, good memories, and delight, especially around a hearty meal or one of his blazing camp fires. He was the kind of man you could count on, a loving person who steadied you with his appreciation for wonder as much as his humor and irreverence. It’s safe to say he gave us all the words we needed to clear up our thinking. All who knew him will recall his image at the sound of cowboy boots, a motorcycle engine, or some old time country or rock and roll. He is missed immensely by dear friends and family members.
