John L Westhafer

Obituary

John L. Westhafer, age 88, passed peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2020 in Depoe Bay, OR. He was a long time resident of Stockton, CA. He was born July 21, 1931 in New Cumberland, PA to Harry L. Westhafer and Mary I. Westhafer (nee Shatto). John attended New Cumberland High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA. Following college, John served in the U.S. Army as a hospital administrator.

 

John married Vivian Lucille (Kepner) Westhafer, in Steelton, PA on Feb. 14, 1959. The couple had two children John A. and Donald L. Westhafer. Early years of their marriage were spent in Chambersburg, PA.

 

John worked for H.J. Heinz Co. for 34 years; beginning his career in Chambersburg, PA. He later transferred to Pennsville, NJ and then to Stockton, CA where he retired as the Senior Bacteriologist for the Pacific Coast. His social affiliations included PALS with the Assistance League, SIRS, and Widowed Persons Association of California. He was also an elder and long time member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church of Stockton, CA.

 

John was a family man who enjoyed gardening, BBQ grilling and making Christmas cookies. John is survived by John A. Westhafer and his wife Carol; Donald L. Westhafer and his wife Jennifer; grandchildren Nicole Cuga and her husband Justin, Andy Westhafer, Robert Westhafer and great granddaughter Nora Cuga; sister-in-law Donna Althouse and her husband Kenneth.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Mary; wife Lucille; sister Margie Stahle and her husband Robert.

 

A family memorial service was held in Depoe Bay, July 1, and a niche service will take place at a future date. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Waldport, OR; St. Andrew’s Lutheran, Stockton, CA Church’s Outreach Ministry; The Haggin Museum, Stockton, CA or a recipient of the donor’s choosing.
