Leland Roger Taraba

December 18, 1938 ~ February 19, 2020 (age 81)

Leland Roger Taraba, age 81, of Newport, Oregon passed away peacefully in his home in Newport, Oregon on February 19, 2020 with his wife, Terrie, at his side. He was born on December 18, 1938 in Princeton, Missouri to George and Anna Taraba of Cainsville, Missouri.

He grew up on his parents farm near Cainsville. His father died when Leland was 12. He took over the operation of his mother's farm at age 16 and continued until she died 21 years later.

Leland met Terrie at a local skating rink when she was 15. He asked her for a date two years later. When she finished school 5 years after that, they got married and lived on a farm not far from his mother's and he farmed both farms for the next eleven years. While there, their daughters Laura and Julia were born.

After his mother died, and her estate was settled, they loaded up their girls and what belongings they could get into their car, and moved to Newport, Oregon to try it for a year and never left.

Leland and Terrie were members of the Toledo 49'ers Square dance club 1980-1995. He was an active member of the Yaquina Art Association Photography club for many years, and an active supporter of the local Parkinson's support group.

His hobbies were selling his framed photography and cards at the Newport Farmers Market for 20 years and at the Waldport Street Market for 5 years. He was proud that some of his art sold went to many foreign countries. He was also an avid Portland Trailblazer fan.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents and five older sibilings.

He is survived by his wife Terrie; daughters Laura (Douglas) Kantor and Julia (Eric) Sandvall; and granddaughter Brook.

Leland fought a long battle wit Parkinson's Disease, but he never gave in to it.  Terrie likes to say "He did not die due to Parkinson's, but he died with it. His body just wore out."

Donations in his memory may be made to Parkinson's Resources of Oregon, if desired.

Celebration of Life has been canceled, please be sure to share on the Tribute Wall.
