Obituary

Lois Irene Wheeler December 16, 1930-June 29, 2020

Lois Irene Wheeler, 89 years old, passed away on June 29, 2020 at her home in Newport, Oregon. She was the widow of Vern Wheeler, who she shared 28 years with. Lois was born in Santa Clara, California, the daughter of John and Florence Manley December 16, 1930. Her family moved shortly thereafter to Olympia, Washington, where she graduated from high school in 1948. Lois married William”Bill” Kay in 1950, and moved to Newport six years later. She and Bill had seven children together, lived very active lives and later divorced in 1978. It was then that Lois and Vern Wheeler met and was married in October of 1980. While raising a large family, she worked with a number of local companies, including J.C. Markets, the Central Lincoln Public Utility District and Maxi’s clothing store.

Lois touched many people in her community, both with her passion for life and dedication to family and friends. She loved camping, cooking, gardening, gathering nature’s bounty (and preparing it in the kitchen!) and traveling around Oregon, her adopted home. She was an enthusiastic member of her women’s bowling team, a proud member of the Red Hat Lady’s Group and a devoted Catholic for much of her life. In 2016, she began attending services at the non-denominational South Beach Church. Each morning she awoke looking forward to what adventures the day would hold, and what friends – new and old – she’d get to share those adventures with.

Lois is survived by her children from her first marriage—Mike, Robert, Bruce, Scott, Casey and Nancy (her daughter Jeni passed away in 1998); her stepchildren John(deceased), Mike and Wendy; and grandchildren Tyson, Josh, Dallas, Sara, Steven, Levi, Ella, Riley, Kelsey, Katie, Ko, Casey, and Cody.

A “Celebration of Life” service WILL BE scheduled at a later date (due to current COVID-19 health and safety of public gatherings disallowed). A Service will be announced once gatherings are allowed. Memorial donation may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Friends of the Newport Senior Activity Center (541-265-9617) and the Newport office of Good Samaritan Evergreen Hospice (541-574-1811).
