Mary Ella Bartels, 76, of Newport, Oregon died in her home, surrounded by her family, on June 26, 2021. She was born on July 6, 1944, in Marlin, Texas and raised in Oroville, Washington.
She was a Member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and the great-great granddaughter of Hiram F. “Okanogan” Smith, the first white settler of Okanogan County, father of Washington’s apple industry, and a state representative.
A gifted pianist from childhood, she graduated from Oroville High School in 1962 and attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney. In 1965, she began working for the Colville Confederated Tribes in Nespelem, Washington and served as secretary for the Executive Director for seven years.
She married James Timothy “Tim” Hurley on April 17, 1970, in Spokane and became a mother in June 1973, when their only child, Jennifer Anne, was born. They divorced in 1984.
In 1979, she began a career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the Colville Agency before relocating to the Oregon Coast in 1985. She continued her work with the BIA at the Siletz Agency until her retirement in 2004, serving as the agency’s Indian Self-Determination Assistant.
On May 10, 1986, she married David Bartels in Newport, Oregon. They lived happily on the Oregon Coast for 20 years and also enjoyed a second home in Troy, Montana until his passing in June 2006.
Mary was an avid reader and loved horseback riding, crochet, traveling, playing the slots, and spending time with her grandchildren. During her retirement years, she also served as a clerical volunteer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Irwin and Mary Helen Truster; her first husband, Tim; her second husband, Dave; and her grandson, Eric Jacob Locklear.
Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Locklear and her husband, Morgan Locklear of Newport, Oregon; her sister, Patricia Roullier of Phoenix, Arizona; grandson, Cameron Locklear, and granddaughter, Abby Locklear.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9th, at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Family and friends are invited to attend.
