Licensed Funeral Director
Debby has lived in Newport for more than 20 years and has been with Bateman Funeral Home since 2009. “I never would have thought of a career in the funeral business. But here I am and it’s the most rewarding job I could ever have.”
Debby is a 5th generation Oregonian who grew-up in Grants Pass and then graduated from the University of Oregon School of Journalism. She worked as a News Director and DJ at a country radio station in Corvallis for 12 years and then worked for the Lincoln County School District as the Public Information Officer. “My position was cut in 2002. I love Newport and wanted to stay. So I floated around for a while until one day I was at a birthday party. Gene Bateman was also at the party and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was looking for a job and he said he was looking for an office manager at the funeral home. I got the job and after a couple of years found that I really liked working with families and helping them thru their grief and confusion.”
Debby completed her apprenticeship at Bateman and became a licensed Funeral Director in 2012.
Debby enjoys working in her yard and has more than 60 rhododendrons, azaleas, and hydrangeas. She likes cooking (and eating) good food, cheering for the Oregon Ducks & Seattle Seahawks, and having her morning coffee with the two cats that she bottle fed when they were born under her house and abandoned by their mother.
